If I were forced to choose between teaching and research, it would be a tough call. I get just as much satisfaction from interacting with my students as with my research subjects. At times (as I am sure all educators do), I see that some aspect of my teaching is not having the desired effect – reflecting on these observations allows me to continually improve. But whenever my students have light bulb moments or produce very high-quality work, I am gratified and inspired to keep working hard at teaching.
